The easiest way to get from San José’s Juan Santamaría airport (SJO) to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a private transfer or a shared shuttle; the cheapest is the MEPE public bus from downtown San José. Whichever you choose, the 233 km trip takes roughly four and a half to five and a half hours, mostly on Route 32 across Braulio Carrillo National Park and then south along the Caribbean coast of Limón province.

What are the ways to get from San José to Puerto Viejo?
There are five realistic options. Times are for the full trip; details were checked on 25 September 2026.

How long is the drive, and what is Route 32 like?
Plan on 4.5 to 5.5 hours with a stop. Routing software puts the 233 km from SJO at about 4 hours 45 minutes in free-flowing traffic, which you should rarely count on.
Route 32 climbs out of the Central Valley and crosses Braulio Carrillo National Park to the Caribbean lowlands and the port city of Limón. From there, Route 36 runs south along the coast through Cahuita and Hone Creek to Puerto Viejo.
The mountain stretch through the Zurquí sector of Braulio Carrillo closes repeatedly after heavy rain because of landslides; closures were reported in November 2025, May 2026 and August 2026. Check the road status on MOPT or Waze before you leave. A closure can last hours, so carry water and snacks and keep some slack in your plans.
How does the MEPE bus work?
MEPE (Autotransportes MEPE) runs direct buses between San José and Puerto Viejo from Terminal Atlántico Norte, at Avenida 9, Calle 12 (the former San Carlos terminal; tel. +506 2257-8129). The trip takes about 4 hours 30 minutes.

Fares are regulated by ARESEP. A third-party timetable site listed about ₡7,230 (roughly US$14) for 2026, but we could not confirm that figure, so check at the counter. Times change, too: call the Puerto Viejo ticket office (+506 2750-0023) or message MEPE on WhatsApp (+506 7285-2535) before you travel.
The bus leaves from downtown, not from the airport, so allow time to cross San José by taxi.
Shared shuttle or private transfer: which is better?
A shared shuttle is usually the better value for one or two people; a private transfer wins on flexibility, and often on cost once you are a family or a group.
Shared shuttles run on fixed timetables. A local directory lists Caribe Shuttle departures at 5:30 and 14:00 and Interbus departures at 7:30 and 13:30 from the San José area; confirm times and current fares with the operator, and book ahead, because some runs only operate with a minimum number of passengers.
A private transfer goes door to door, stops when you ask, and waits for nobody else. Conga’s private transfer to SJO airport is listed at US$275 for a trip of about 5 hours, with departures at 8 am and noon. Is there Uber in Puerto Viejo?
Don’t count on it. Uber announced service in Limón in 2021, but a local guide describes it as not legal in the area, and we can’t confirm its status in 2026. For the long trip from San José, use a transfer, shuttle, bus or car. Once you are here, red official taxis and tuk-tuks do the short runs; agree the fare before you set off. How do you get there from Liberia (LIR)?
It’s a full travel day. Liberia’s Daniel Oduber airport is 436 km from Puerto Viejo, about 7 hours 40 minutes of driving without stops, so plan on 8 to 9 hours.
One way to break the journey is a few nights at Arenal. Our private transfer on the La Fortuna (Arenal) route is listed at US$375, about 5 hours, and our Tamarindo route, on the Pacific side near Liberia, at US$530, about 7.5 hours. Which Puerto Viejo: Talamanca or Sarapiquí?
Costa Rica has two towns called Puerto Viejo. Ours is Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, in Limón province on the southern Caribbean coast. Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí is a different town in the north of the country.
When you buy a bus ticket, book a shuttle or set your GPS, include “Talamanca” or “Limón”. For GPS, Conga’s coordinates are about 9.6566, -82.7455, on Calle Rosa at the edge of town on the Cocles side; the postal code is 70403.
When should you plan to arrive at Conga?
Check-in is from 3 pm. Counting 4.5 to 5.5 hours on the road, leaving the airport area by about 10 am gets you here in time to unpack and swim before sunset.
